Brand new direct from maker Jake Hoback we bring you the Hoback Knives Kwaiback MK4 UHEP (Ultra High End Production) flipper in a full Black DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) coated finish. The "Ultra" is spot-on as these Kwaibacks have all the features of Jake's custom shop knives. From the materials to the fit and finish, Jake has overseen the build of these knives every step of the way.
The Blade: Based on traditional Japanese-style kwaikens, the Kwaiback has a near four inch upswept modified tanto blade. Super thick and wicked sharp, the finish is a thick DLC coated Black with short thumb ramp. There are no markings on the premium blade that just absolutely flies out of the handle thanks to an integral flipper. It rides on caged pivot thrust bearings (cold formed bearing races work hardened to increase bearing and knife life) and uses the HRD (Hoback Roller Detent) System for smooth-as-silk operation. Multiple flat grinds create superior cutting performance.
The Handle: Each of the two titanium handle slabs that make up the handle are as thick as the blade (.1875"). They have been DLC coated with machined grooves in them for added grip. The grip and balance on the Kwaiback is outstanding. The interior has lightening pockets and is drilled on both sides for right or left hand tip up carry. Rock solid frame lock up is about as precise as it gets. There is a hardened stainless steel lock insert with over travel protection and the Hoback Roller Detent system. All of this is assembled in and around the lockface to aid in smoother overall operation of the knife. The HRD also allows the end user to slightly adjust the tension.
However you choose to label the Kwaiback Flipper, it doesn't change the fact that it is one of the most innovative folders on the market. There is not one part of this knife that hasn't been engineered to near custom knife industry standards. The Kwaiback is finished off with DLC coated standoffs, screws and Hoback Custom pocket clip. It comes in a wood display box and has the year, steel (**Note, all Black Versions marked CPM20VC**) and UHEP marked on the inside of the handle.About CPM-20CV: A highly wear resistant, powder metallurgy stainless tool steel, the steel contains a large volume of extremely hard vanadium carbides which provide excellent wear resistance. CPM-20CV contains the highest amount of chromium of any high-vanadium stainless steel currently available. The chromium-rich matrix provides outstanding corrosion resistance.
