The Model 4 frame lock from Calavera Maker Jeremy Robertson is a bit wider and stockier than its El Patron brother. The beefiness of the Model 4 is felt immediately in hand. It's much more palm filling than the El Patron yet still a great average hand size. Very comfortable, clean design.
The Blade: Length is bumped up a bit from the 3.25 El Patron to 3.50 inches in length with a new grind. A spear shape with a little belly is wide with a medium height hollow grind. It's quite sharp right to the tip with custom upper swedge grinds. The finish is the dark, broken in acid wash we're used to on Jeremy's blades. Some of the darkest in the business. It opens with Jeremy's wide thumb window fit for most thumbs, even gloved. The action is smooth as it moves along phosphor bronze washes at the pivot. Notching on the thumb ramp isn't aggressive as it more cradles the thumb in place.
The Handle: Two thick, wide slabs of Titanium have chamferred edges and the dark washed finish. Ergonomics are outstanding. As mentioned, it is wider than the El Patron and more palm filling...but in a great way. The frame lock is strong and early keeping the blade in check for years to come. A smooth, very lightly textured OD green G10 scale has been inlaid into the front slab. It adds a nice accent to the dark knife and improves the overall feel in-hand. The tank is backed by a large hex spacer toward the rear of the handle.
Overall, the Model 4 is a solid design. It would make an excellent EDC able to tackle tougher chores than most. Hand ground with excellent fit and finish. Included on the 4 is a tip-up deep carry titanium pocket clip, smooth edges and a lanyard post below the hex spacer.About CTS-XHP: An alloy steel made by Carpenter, CTS-XHP was developed as a corrosion resistant D2 alternative. Our research shows users estimating edge retention slightly ahead of S30V, and toughness comparable to D2. This makes CTS-XHP a premium steel, which should hold a great edge and be reasonably corrosion resistant.
