Alan Folts

Custom knifemaker, Alan Folts, became interested in tools and sculpting at the young age of 8 while watching his grandfather work around his farm. At 11, Folts began working with metals in his father’s garage. Just a few short years later, at 16, he started to explore the more artistic side of metal works by making jewelry from copper and brass. He also began forging small objects using a propane torch.

His interest in arts and sculpting led him to pursue an education in the field. Alan tried many different mediums of art, such as painting and drawing, but was still captivated by sculpting. His passion of sculpting sparked an interest in the casting of metals, such as bronze, silver and gold. After learning this craft, Folts entered a knife of his in a student art competition. The knife went on to win “Best of Show”.

In 1995, Folts moved to North Carolina. He continued to pursue a career in the development and design of high end blades and joined the North Carolina Custom Knifemaker’s Guild. Currently, Alan is a full-time knifemaker. He also finds time to teach and mentor others entering the field of knifemaking. Alan has been most widely recognized for his Minimalist design, which was licensed by Columbia River Knife and Tool. Folts has many other designs of which to take interest as well, such as the Baby Bear, S.P.E.W and the brand new GP1 exclusive, to name a few. He has been a pleasure to work with and we here at gpknives look forward to our continued relationship with him!
