• Double-Ended Flat Bits - Leatherman builds these flat instead of round, so a standard hex bit fits half the space. That is how 21 of them ride in two sleeves small enough for a pocket. Each bit is double-ended, and they sit snug in the holder, taking a deliberate push to work one free.
• S2 Steel with a Matte Phosphate Finish - S2 is a shock-resisting tool steel, meant to take impact at the tip without snapping. Lean on one of these and it holds. The black phosphate over it comes up matte and dry, with enough tooth to keep a small bit from slipping between your fingers.
• 42 Driver Tips - Square drive #1 and #2, Torx #6 through #30, Phillips #0 through #3, slotted from 3/32 inch to 1/4 inch, Pozi #1 and #2, hex in metric from 1.5mm to 6mm and imperial from .050 inch to 1/4 inch, and a dedicated eyeglass screwdriver.

A round hex bit needs a socket deep enough to swallow it, forcing the driver to be a separate tool you carry on purpose. Flat bits let the driver hide in a handle already holding pliers, a blade and a saw, so the screwdriver set stops being something you decide about and just comes along. The one limit is that standard quarter-inch hex will not seat directly, and runs instead through the Bit Driver Extender, one of the Leatherman accessories built to bridge the two.
