Shire Post Mint | Helm of Awe Aegishjalmur | Viking Coin Copper

Icelandic Staves are magical sigils purported to have supernatural powers with various effects. Ægishjálmur in Icelandic is also known as the Warrior's Stave or Helm and The Helm of Awe or Helm of Terror. This sigil was though to induce fear in one's enemies, protect the warrior and prevail in battle.

History of the Warrior's Stave from Shire Post Mint

Ancient history of the stave comes from the Fáfnismál, one of the poems in the Poetic Edda. In it the havoc-wreaking dragon Fafnir attributes much of his apparent invincibility to his use of the Helm of Awe:

  • The Helm of Awe, I wore before the sons of men, In defense of my treasure; Amongst all, I alone was strong, I thought to myself, For I found no power a match for my own.

This interpretation is confirmed by a spell called “There is a Simple Helm of Awe Working” in the collection of Icelandic folktales collected by the great Jón Árnason in the nineteenth century. The spell reads:

  • Make a helm of awe in lead, press the lead sign between the eyebrows, and speak the formula: Ægishjálm er ég ber milli brúna mér! I bear the helm of awe between my brows! If you are daring enough to try, we hope that this spell will help you press through challenges and cross into newer horizons.

Minting process

Treated to look as if it has been handled and circulated, this process is done by hand, and it is both an art and a science, coloring and patinas will vary. No two are exactly the same.

Coins are struck one at a time in the USA using antique machinery and traditional coining techniques. A colorful description is included with history and facts about the coin.
